People escaping the violence between India and Pakistan in Kashmir have settled in the Pakistan controlled land of Azad Kashmir. The refugees have been arriving here since 1989. Now, with over 17,000 of them dotting the green terrain with makeshift tents, it has become a real problem for both the people of Kashmir and the two countries who will have to deal with increasing number of refugees. Many of them have come to try and rebuild their lives after years of conflict near the border. Hiram Ruiz, the director of communications for the U.S committee of Refugees says, “Many of them have fled out of fear for their lives from the Indian forces, as well as the destruction of their houses.” This has lead many of them to have little or nothing to eat. The conflict which began in 1947, has claimed more than 33,000 lives since 1989.
